subject: Considerations When Hosting a Baby Shower [print this page]

You would be hard pressed to find anyone who doesn't enjoy attending a baby shower. It is a celebration of a joyous event in the life of a friend or family member; not to mention that you get to ooh and aah over all the baby clothes that are so small and so cute. Because it is such a happy occasion, hosting a baby shower can be a lot of fun. If you have a friend or family member who is pregnant and you want to host a baby shower for her, here are some things to consider before setting a date.

The first step is to create a guest list. This will likely be a mixture of friends and family members of the mother-to-be. You should discuss the list with either the guest of honor or her mother prior to sending out the baby shower invitations to ensure that you don't overlook anyone who should be invited. It is always a good idea to have the guests RSVP so that you will have a good idea of how many people to expect at the party.

Knowing how many guests you will have is important for the next step, which is planning the menu for the baby shower. This will vary greatly, depending on whether you are having a mid-afternoon party where light snacks and beverages are appropriate, or an evening event that might include dinner, or possibly finger food that is substantial enough to feel like a meal. Whatever you decide on for a menu, cake is always appropriate, as well as fairly traditional baby shower fare. Some people choose to serve wine or champagne at a baby shower, but you might want to think twice about this now that there is substantial medical evidence that consuming alcohol while pregnant is not a good idea.

Additional considerations when planning to host a baby shower include whether or not you are going to decorate your house in some way, whether you are going to play any sort of baby shower games, and if you want to have some sort of gift bags to give to each party guest. None of these is required, but each can add fun to the occasion, which is your objective, after all!
