Peugeot is taking its new electric car, the iOn, to Paris to show it off at the motor show later this month. The car is based on the Mitsubishi i-MEV, and will go on sale across Europe in the next few months.

The iOn has a slightly more European feel than its sister model, with a single tone exterior body colour and warmer coloured upholstery. Like the i-MEV though, it has all the basics that make it one of the most interesting and capable electric cars around.

Thanks to golf buggies and milk floats, electric cars (at least as driver's cars) seem to have generated a bad rap. How many of us think of electric cars as great for the environment, but miserable for driving? It's a preconception that the iOncrushes. Even at low revs, electric motors produce loads of torque, which means that acceleration is rapid. The downside is that the top speed is a modest 80mph, but given that this car is designed for getting around town, that won't be a great limitation.

As for driving experience, the iOn is not a difficult car to adapt to. There is no need to change gear the power just surges in smoothly and quietly, and the tight turning circle makes it easy to manoeuvre. The rear wheel drive and low centre of mass add that little injection of fun to the whole experience. Peugeot have stated that the electric model's range is 150km just under 100 miles though this would be reduced by using the heating or air conditioning and by heavy traffic.

For urban driving, the iOn is practical, manoeuvrable and above all, green. Even the best electric cars, however, require customers to adapt their thinking and behaviour. It's up to the consumer to modify their lifestyle to make the most of technological advancements such as the iOn.
