Automobile Check-ups Keep The Car In Gear

With winter in full gear it is important to be up-to-date on all of your automobile check-ups. Be prepared for the harsh winter and driving by getting maintenance work done on your car.

Winter safety check-ups are important especially if you live in a place that gets snow and ice. Your car drives differently on these mediums then it does on a dry road. If you don't have your car up-to-date it could cause more winter accidents.

First, check your antifreeze.

Antifreeze is the liquid that goes in your radiator and protects your car from getting too cold or freezing. Your car contains a 50/50 mix of water and antifreeze.

Make sure the level is full and the mixture is close to 50/50, so that it does not freeze in the cold. Many service stations and repair centers will check this mixture for free, or you can buy a tester and do it yourself.

Second, get your tires inspected.

This is probably the most important thing when it comes to winter maintenance. Your tires need to work on ice and snow, both of which are very slippery and hard to drive on.

Get your tire tread depth checked. The deeper the tread depth is the better for winter driving.

Also, be sure to check your tire pressure. Tire pressure generally goes down at least a little bit in the cold weather.

Third, be sure that you windshield wipers are working properly.

Windshield wipers will be a lifesaver when it comes to your windshield visibility. They will help to wipe off snow or any other visually impairing objects.

Fourth, check your windshield washer fluid.

Snow is white, but when it mixes with car exhaust and particles on the road it is more of a grayish black. When the snow from off the road splashes up on your car it will make it dirty.

This is where windshield washer fluid comes in handy to clean off your dirty windshield and make it easier for you to see the road.

Fifth, check your headlights.

In winter, the sun goes down earlier and comes up later causing drivers to rely on their headlights more than in other seasons. Take the time to replace any dull lights or bulbs that have gone out.

Remember that it is unsafe to drive with only one headlight and you can actually get pulled over and given a ticket.

Sixth, inspect your brakes and ensure that they are working properly.

A quick check up is definitely worth your time. If you start feeling like your brakes are seizing up or not working properly, quickly take them into a mechanic to be checked and fixed.

Maintaining your brakes is easy, but a mishap with your brakes can be devastating, so don't take it lightly if your brakes are feeling out of whack.

Seventh, check your engine oil.

If it is low make sure you add more oil. Oil is a crucial component to keep your car functioning properly. Take the time to check your oil at least monthly, to ensure that your car is getting enough throughout the year.

Eighth, clean your battery posts.

Corrosion is very likely to build up on your battery posts during the harsh winter weather driving. Check your battery posts and cables to ensure you'll have no starting problems.

When you take the time to take care of your car it will be more capable of taking care of you. Get your car maintenance done which will help you to prevent accidents, especially during the winter months.
