subject: A Balanced ADHD Diet [print this page]

Using a balanced diet to help with ADD / ADHD issues is one more weapon in the arsenal needed to combat this often-times crippling condition. When combined with time-tested techniques and in certain cases prescription medicines or natural supplements, a consistent diet with the correct nutrients, minerals, proteins and complex carbohydrates you can help to manage a sometimes uncontrollable situation.

Some of the things to look for when planning a diet for an ADHDkid or adult are to avoid processed foods or those that have refined sugars in their production. Avoid caffeinated products altogether, but that doesn't mean to add decaffeinated sodas to the diet - those are processed and add chemicals to the body that can counter effect the program. Chocolates can be enjoyed moderately, but excess amounts can affect the body chemistry and lead to problems as well.

It is important to note that part of the issue affecting the person with ADHD is an increase of lead or copper in their system. The best method to help decrease these levels is by eating citric fruit. Oranges, tangerines, grapefruit and many others can be used to add to a healthy diet.

Another common trait among defiant children with ADHD / ADD is an iron deficiency. Foods that are rich in iron are Lean Beef, Pork, Veal and Lamb. There are also many leafy green vegetables such as spinach, collared greens, watercress and parsley. There are many dried beans, nuts and certain types of fish that qualify as well. Please note that some people do not process iron well and Vitamin C will be essential in helping with their digestion. Also very important to note is that excessive iron intake can lead to serious medical issues including death - so please see a doctor before beginning any use of additional iron to a diet.

B-complex vitamins and soy products can also be of great use in a diet to help someone suffering from ADD /ADHD. These have been known to assist with increasing your sense of calm as well as helping out any of the body's stressed nerves.

As with any information provided regarding medical conditions it is imperative that a doctor be consulted before administering any treatments to make sure that the individual situation you're dealing with doesn't have any additional concerns not previously covered. If you follow these recommendations, however, you too may find yourself in a better position to combat the condition that is ADD / ADHD.
