subject: Tips for Choosing Your Best Man and Bridesmaids [print this page]

If you have many friends it can be a hard choice when it comes to choosing your best man and the same can apply to bridesmaids. If you intend to plan your wedding meticulously every step of the way, even down to taking out wedding insurance to make sure the big day is a success, you may want to spend a great deal of time choosing who to have standing at your side.

The Best Man and Ushers

The best man and ushers play an important role in your wedding. Your best man needs to be by your side throughout the planning of the wedding, the run up to it and of course play an active role on the big day itself. This is a great responsibility; the best man has a great deal more to worry about than the speech. With this in mind you need to choose someone who is absolutely reliable, who will not let you down, no matter what. When looking for a best man you want someone whose shoulder you can cry on, someone who will talk you through any worries you may have and more importantly someone who will ensure that you get to the church on time on your wedding day. With this in mind you may wish to write a list of all your friends who qualify and then note down their bad and good points. Eliminate the ones who you think may even be the slightest bit undependable and keep narrowing down your list until you have the perfect best man.

When choosing ushers you can be a little more flexible. However, of course you need ushers than know what their job for the day is and who are capable of being able to carry it out.

Bridesmaids

Choosing the bridesmaids is never an easy task for the bride. You might have a special friend who you have known without question will be the chief bridesmaid. However, you will usually want at least two of three bridesmaids with you. You may have friends vying to grab your attention to choose them, or they may shrink away with the belief that "once a bridesmaid never a bride". This of course then makes your job a great deal harder. There is no law as to how many bridesmaids you can have so if you are one of the lucky brides with four or five friends and relatives all clambering to put on a dress go for it and have them all. However, bear in mind that the more bridesmaids you have, the more the outfits and wedding are going to cost and the more wedding insurance you may have to take out to cover the dresses.

When considering having children, especially very small children you must be prepared for the unexpected to happen. Small children are not the most reliable, they may be tired by the time they have to "do their thing", they may feel unwell or may just change their mind about the whole thing and refuse to co-operate. However, this is not to say that you should not have them, just be aware of the possibilities and smile through it.
