subject: Does The Medifast Diet Really Work? [print this page] I will answer the question of "does medifast really work"in two ways. First, I will share my opinion on it and then I will share with you the results of clinical studies which evaluated the effectiveness of the diet so that you can decide for yourself if this diet would work for you.
Medifast Worked For Me: I have to disclose that I have been on tons of diets in my life (Atkins, Weight Watchers, South Beach, Mediterranean, etc., etc.) and none really worked for me long term the way that this one has.I've hit a few plateaus but it never slowed down very much and has been steady. I believe the reason this diet works so well due to a few reasons, as follows.
First, it's convenient and you get to eat six times per day so you don't feel as hungry as you might suspect.
Second, the plan is very convenient. The food is mostly provided for you, is very easy to assemble, tastes decent, and is basically grab and go. You don't have to count calories or tally points.
Finally, this diet is really high in protein which tricks your body into burning it's own fat. This contributes to quick results for most people which makes the diet easier to stick to. Obviously, if you're seeing positive results, you will be motivated to keep at it to see even more.
Clinical Studies: There have been a couple of impressive clinical studies which evaluated how effective Medifast really is and how well it really works. I'll discuss two of the more well known below.
The John Hopkins Obesity Study: Doctors at The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine conducted a study wherein 185 dieters used Medifast for weight loss for 16 weeks (four months). The males in the study lost an average of around 67 pounds while the women in the study lost an average of about 47 pounds. Even more impressive was the fact that a significant reduction on the dieter's blood pressure and cholesterol was seen so much so that over 90% of the hypertensive patients had normal blood pressure readings at the end.
John Hopkins Diabetes Study: In this study (also at John Hopkins) researchers took a look at 112 overweight or obese people with Type 2 diabetes over 86 weeks. The dieters were either placed on Medifast or on the ADA (American Diabetic Association) diet. The dieters who were on Medifast lost twice as much weight as the folks on the ADA diet and stuck with the diet and completed the study twice as often. And, they were more likely to significantly decrease or totally did away with their diabetes medication.
The researchers noted that meal replacement plans are easier for dieters to follow and required less effort than the ADA diet.
Of course, although both of these studies are compelling, I know first hand that the experience you have with this diet and how well it works for you is going to depend on your sticking with it and consuming it as designed.
Still, I do believe from my own experience and knowing many people who have had success on this weight loss program that it is well designed to be convenient, easy to follow, and to really work and work quickly if followed as instructed.
