subject: Are You Intimidated By Taking Yoga : Advice From A Boca Raton Teacher [print this page] Over the last few years, some of my calls for private yoga instruction has been from people concerned about attending a yoga class. Some of the reasons involve self-consciousness on one's flexibility or weight. For others it involves fears of making mistakes in front of others. There are also reasons that revolve around one's work schedule as well as getting individualized tips.
A private lesson can be helpful to reduce fear of attending a class as well as to get specific tips for one's own body type and life situation. Keep in mind that there are class options in yoga centers for beginners so that is a question to ask at a local yoga center.
People also can start with taking a private lesson or two and then graduate to a class setting in time. The advantage to individual lessons is that one can increase one's comfort level, get individualized instructions for relaxation based on the stressors in one's own life and receive tips for maximizing one's flexibility.
Group classes can create a feeling of community, especially if one gets passed the feelings of self-consciousness. Remember that yoga is not a competition and it is about learning how to feel the peace that is inside of you.
Don't let yourself get distracted by others who may have greater flexibility or physical fitness. Start with your own abilities and you will see wonderful progress with consistency.
Yoga tunes you into a sense of contentment that is independent of external circumstances. Our finances, health and relationships often shift and learning how to stay calm and balanced in the midst of these changes is one outcome of a steady yoga practice. The tools you learn through these lessons are applicable to all life settings from school concentration to parenting to job presentations. We aren't taught these skills in school and many of my clients speak about their increased abilities to be less reactive in stressful situations.
Instead of having knee-jerk reactions, a moment of calm develops that enables us to not fall into anger or heated responses to situations. Controlling the mind is one of the results from yoga that most people like the most. We cannot control others' behaviors but we can learn how to cope with our own emotions and be more balanced and relaxed each day. Whether you choose an individual yoga lesson or a group class, you'll learn skills that will help with daily calmness and better performance.
