subject: The Psychological Benefits Of Breast Cancer Reconstruction Surgery [print this page]

Cancer is devastating for anyone, and even when someone recovers, it takes its toll. The scars aren't just physical, they are mental as well, and those can linger for far longer than the physical ones can. No one knows this better than a woman who has faced breast cancer. Reconstruction surgery is not a matter of personal choice for them, its an opportunity to regain lost self esteem and perhaps feel whole

again.

A woman who has recovered from breast cancer but has had a breast removed or operated upon because of this disease should definitely look into reconstructive surgery as an option. In a recent research conducted in England, it was found that women who underwent mastectomy but didn't go for reconstruction were likely to suffer the most amount of depression and loss of self esteem among all the nearly 600 women surveyed. While there are some cases where this type of surgery isn't ideal, especially for patients whose age makes back to back surgeries dangerous, that is not the case with most younger, otherwise healthier women.

For many women their sense of femininity is tied to their breasts. They are a symbol of their sensuality as well as motherhood, and a mastectomy, while crucial and life-saving, can have tremendous negative impact on their sense of self worth. When these women go under the knife, they don't do it simply to get their attractive, feminine curves back, or to restore their bodies to their old, familiar shape, but also to establish their femininity and counter the low self esteem that comes to almost anyone who has fallen victim to a disease like breast cancer. Reconstruction of your breasts via surgical means is of course a major decision and no woman should take such a decision without thinking deeply about it as well as educating herself about the potential risks and dangers involved, but you should definitely keep in mind the various psychological benefits of breast cancer reconstruction.

However, one factor you need to be very careful about once you decide to go for this surgical procedure is where you get it done. There are many so called plastic surgery "experts" who promise high quality breast cancer reconstruction, but the end results usually disappoint. You can imagine what effect that kind of disappointment has on a womans psyche that is already weakened after the grueling ordeal of her disease. So make sure you pick a plastic surgeon or a clinic that is experienced, skilled and thoroughly professional if you want the best results possible.
