subject: How Some Ladies Are Able To Get Pregnant After Tubal Ligation [print this page]

When a woman has her tubes tied, she is normally trying to avoid the possibility of pregnancy because she is finished having children. The doctor will normally cut or clip her fallopian tubes to prevent the eggs from traveling from the ovary into the uterus for fertilization. However, as with anything, sometimes people have a change of heart and decide that they want to still have a family. When that happens, there are really two main options.

First of all, there is certainly the option of in vitro fertilization. IVF is a procedure where the doctor gives a woman strong hormone injections in order to harvest as many of her eggs as possible. They are then fertilized and implanted in her uterus. However, the procedure has a pretty low success rate per cycle at about 35%. Also, the procedures are quite expensive at $10,000 to $12,000 per cycle. Many women cannot afford to continually try to get pregnant with no guarantee of success.

There is no reason to give up, however. The best option for these women is called tubal ligation reversal. This procedure is much less expensive and results in a permanent fix to the problem. The doctor will repair and reattach the fallopian tubes which will allow the woman to conceive naturally once again. There is no need for hormone injections either.

Another important point to make about a tubal ligation reversal is that the success rate is much higher at about 70%. Because it is a permanent fix to the problem, a woman can try to get pregnant as often as she wishes.

There are some criteria that a woman must meet in order to be a good candidate for surgery. First of all, the surgeon will need to see her original tubal ligation surgical report in order to know what kind of procedure she had. Also, the length of her remaining tubes is also important to know. Obviously, the doctor will need plenty of tissue to be able to reattach things.
