Feeding Instructions For Dogs From Feng Shui For Fido

Having taken on the responsibility for living with large dogs (and of course, living with small dogs), you no doubt want to keep them happy and healthy. Unlike you, your dog's reaction to food will be based on how good or bad that food is for him and on the quantity you give. Dogs are not persuaded by nice packaging or outrageous claims the way their people are. You will see in just a day or two, whether the food you're providing gives your dog energy and a shiny coat, or whether he has trouble digesting it and he's showing the signs.

The amount of food you give should be based on the size and activity level of the dog. Since this is a trial and error method in the beginning, try to err on the side of feeding too little rather than too much. Just like their humans, dogs suffer many serious negative effects from being overweight. If you take your dog on a long hike one day, you should remember to add a little extra food to his bowl.

There are so many good foods for dogs to eat, it shouldn't be difficult at all to make the right choice. Even though all dog foods are not alike, you don't have to pay a fortune to find a food that gives your dog lots of energy while keeping him happy and healthy. Kibble is always a better choice for dogs than canned foods. Kibble keeps dogs teeth much cleaner and this is very important to your dog's overall health. A tiny bit of canned food on top of kibble provides the smell dog's respond to and love.

Having your dog on a well-defined feeding and exercise schedule is good for both of you. A set feeding schedule makes it easier for you to determine if your dog is feeling off. When feeding and other activities are somewhat random, it's harder to determine how your dog feels, and what might be causing problems. More importantly, dogs feel more secure the more they follow routines. This is just as true for humans (especially young ones) as it is for pets.
