subject: What Can I Do About My Dog's Leg Wound? [print this page] My best friend recently adopted a young Labrador retriever with a pre-existing leg condition. After x-rays and consultations with specialists, they discovered an old injury hadn't healed properly, which may still result in the amputation of part of the leg in question.
My good friend persevered in her commitment to the newest member of her family, despite the time and cost, so if you have a dog with an affected limb, be aware that keeping him healthy and getting past the injury could potentially be an investment.
Ignoring the problem or skimping on treatment could seriously degrade your canine's quality of life. But what exactly are you supposed to do about it? I can give you a few tips that can help you get your pet's life--and limbs--back on track.
First off, the best thing you can do for your critter is to address the issue immediately. If you notice an open wound or see your pet limping, then carefully inspect the leg. When applicable, take your pet to your trusted animal hospital in cases where there is uncontrolled bleeding or other obviously serious conditions that need treatment right away.
When you see an open sore that is exuding blood or pus, you will want to clean it with hydrogen peroxide and then cover it with a clean bandage. But if you don't see any clear cause for the distress, you still need to keep looking. Painful tumors emerge as a lump or bulge which can be easily overlooked under the mess of fur. If you see signs of a tumor, contact your vet right away.
Pain medication can be prescribed to your dog in the event of injury, but don't rely exclusively on that to address the problem. Just as in cases with people, a good veterinarian will want to cure the underlying issue rather than try to medicate it away.
Fortunately, veterinary medicine is advancing all the time. Specialists can now perform canine ACL surgery and other dog ligament surgery to improve or even eliminate complications from these types of injuries. You will also find that dogs can have knee surgeries and bone implants when necessary.
These can be expensive, but you can almost always work out a reasonable payment plan in order to work the cost into your budget. Remember that your dog's overall quality of life is the most important thing. Continue to monitor your pup's condition, and follow up regularly with his vet to ensure that he stays healthy and active.
