You don't want them to smear and look cheap. Getting an Epson printer for around $100 is pretty easy to do. They are not expensive, but do a very nice job.
The idea of using two envelopes for invites was also an old tradition. Announcements were delivered by horseman and the outside envelope would be dirty and messed up so they put it in another envelope to give a clean envelope to the recipient. Today a lot of times the second envelope is omitted for environmental reasons.
