If I Have A Pre Existing Medical Condition Can I Take Out Critical Illness Insurance?

Every critical illness insurance plan will need to be underwritten and although an application covers a wide variety, you can never guarantee what will happen to your plan until the specified underwriter asses your case. You should not be put off however if you have a pre existing medical condition and on the application form you answer yes to a medical question, this does not mean that you may not be able to get critical illness insurance as each individual case is different to another and therefore will be looked at individually. Each insurance provider also has different guidelines which is why it may in some cases be beneficial to keep your options open to see who will offer you the best contract at the best price.

Within an application form there are a number of questions to answer however some cover more serious illness than others and therefore these may require further consideration than others when underwriting. This is when it may be that the underwriters request additional information from the various options available such as a doctors report to then get clarification on the individual and the illness suffered. Some illnesses which you may perceive as critical may not be in the eyes of some insurance providers as they do not feel that it will then cause you any serious damage in the long term or vice versa. There a profound number of illnesses which people suffer from on a daily basis and therefore every one is different and needs different attention and occurs as a result of different things. No one person will suffer from exactly the same illness as another. The insurance industry is use to illnesses being suffered and has a large of amount of statistics which they can refer to in order to identify how likely it is then such an illness will lead to another or may become critical in the future.

We may all visit our doctor from time to time and some visit may just be for reassurances others may be because they are suffering an illness which needs specialist treatment or medication. However it may be difficult to remember what happened and when, and so when completing an application form and you are asked the dates of when the illness was suffered it may be difficult to identify. It is possible that your doctor would be able to tell you your medical history as they tend to have a log of what you were treated for every time you visit. Some illnesses such as a common cold or flu may not need to be documented on every application however this does vary from provider to provider. However it will be highlighted typically on the front or within the first two pages what would not be relevant.

If for example you had previously suffered from a type of cancer and were still looking at taking out critical illness insurance it does not necessarily mean that you would not be able to get cover. Again it depends on the circumstances of that case; however it is possible for some providers to offer terms but may look at putting on an exclusion to the terms offered. Thus meaning that if you suffered from the type of cancer or even a cancer which arose directly or indirectly from the cancer previously suffered you could then not make a claim but would be covered for the other specified illnesses on the contract offered.

It is then your choice if you choose to accept the offer made by the insurance provider, but it be worth considering as if an exclusion was put into the plan you would still be covered for a number of other illness including major critical illnesses such as a heart attack.
