Marc Jacobs - Influencing Two Global Fashion Brands

American fashion designer Marc Jacobs is one of the most influential people in the fashion world. Not only head designer for his labels Marc Jacobs and Marc by Marc Jacobs, he is also the creative designer for Louis Vuitton. His stores number over 200 and are located around the globe, in over 60 countries.

Despite a challenging upbringing that resulted in Jacobs living with his grandmother in New York City, he graduated from the High School of Art and Design and later studied at the Parsons School of Design, both in New York. While at Parsons, Jacob was awarded the Perry Ellis Gold Thimble as well as the Chester Weinberg Gold Thimble and Design Student of the Year.

Jacobs started working as a stock boy at an avant-garde boutique at age 15. He began designing clothing while he was a student at Parsons and sold his first collection of sweaters at that time. He also designed a collection under the Sketchbook label for Reuben Thomas, Inc. Working together with Robert Duffy, Jacobs created the brand Jacobs Duffy Designs, Inc.

The first collection to be released under the Marc Jacobs label was created in 1986. The following year, Jacobs would receive the Perry Ellis Award for New Fashion Talent. He was the youngest designer to ever receive the award, one of the highest accolades available in the fashion industry.

Jacobs was hired on as the vice president of the women's design team at Perry Ellis in 1988, following the death of Mr. Ellis. He received the Women's Designer of the Year Award in 1992, but was dismissed that same year, following the release of a grunge-style collection. Marc Jacobs International Company was launched the following year.

The collection expanded to include menswear in 1994. Jacobs was named Creative Director at Louis Vuitton in 1997. During that time, he created the first ready-to-wear collection for the label. Marc by Marc Jacobs, Jacobs' second label, was released in 2001.

Today, Jacobs' three collections, Marc Jacobs, Marc by Marc Jacobs and Little Marc -- a children's line -- are available around the world. Additionally, Jacobs' ready-to-wear collections and lines of accessories can be found at numerous upscale department stores. In addition to New York City, some United States locations of Marc Jacobs boutiques include Boston, Massachusetts; Las Vegas, Nevada; Savannah, Georgia; and Chicago, Illinois. International locations include London, Moscow, Copenhagen, Dubai, Kuwait, Tokyo, Osaka, Hong Kong, Manila, Bangkok and Mexico City.

In 2001, Marc Jacobs introduced his fragrance collection, beginning with the eponymous Marc Jacobs for Women. The vibrant green floral featuring notes of gardenia and bergamot was a success, leading to other releases, including:

- Bang for Men, a youthful, spicy fragrance

- Daisy, a sparking fresh scent

- Apple Splash, a fragrance for both men and women
