Have A Break With The Children In Whitby!

Whitby's friendly locals and beautiful beaches make it a firm favourite amongst families of all sizes. There is a huge range of things for your kids to get up to while in Whitby, so why not let them loose for a day while you and your other half enjoy a drink in one of the many fantastic restaurants or cafes in Whitby town centre.

Here's a list of some potential activities your little ones can enjoy while you have a well earned break.

Go to the arcades

Kids have a whale of a time in the arcades; just be sure to limit how much you give them! Always give them their share before they start on the games, otherwise you could end up with them making a scene when you refuse to give them more money! There are racing games, bowling, 2p pushers and shooting games that will keep your children occupied for as long as need be.

Head up the stairs to the abbey

While the abbey's history may not be to the taste of your kids (unless you have particularly well cultured children!), the grounds around the abbey are seriously impressive and they will have a fantastic time running around the grass and enjoying being in the open air above the town. Whitby Abbey is also a great place for a picnic, so if you've brought a pack up for the day, head up the hill for an ideal spot to each lunch.

Buy some rock

There are many sweet shops in Whitby, many of which offer UK made rock, sweets and snacks. Head into them and buy your kids a little treat for the journey home. Some shops also offer homemade donuts, which taste absolutely delicious, and also waffles available with ice cream or jam, or both! While buying your kids a treat, why not treat yourself? Grab something sweet, or if you need something for dinner, visit one of the many great seafood huts that are dotted along Pier Road.

Experience vampires like never before

The Dracula Experience is just before Pier Road in Whitby and is a must visit for children aged 12+. A truly exciting, and at times frightening, place, the Dracula Experience is a building filled with Dracula memorabilia, including coffins and more fangs than you can shake a stick at! With kids being particularly interested by the Twilight series at the moment, this could be a memorable visit for your little rascals.

Paddle on the beach

Kids love paddling and Whitby has a beautiful sandy beach that is perfect for it. It's also ideal for playing football, tennis and beach volleyball with it's substantial space and lack of rocky ground. Be warned though, the water can get a little choppy at times, so always keep an eye on your kids and be sure to check the coastguards' flag to ensure it is safe.
