subject: Effects Of Bullies On Kids [print this page]

I have been hearing on the news recently that there are kids out there committing suicide because of bullying. This is really sick on how kids treat each other. Now the news is finally getting the idea that bullying is more then just a kid coming home upset. It is now causing kids to end their lives.

I am surprised that this issue wasn't dealt with a long time ago. I think that many people growing up had to deal with being bullied. I for one was a victim of bullying in the seventh grade. So I know how bullied kids feel. I didn't want to go to school. It continued when I was even home.

One particular kid use to send me emails harassing me. This was before social network sites like Myspace or Facebook were around. I would be on AOL and this person would try to instant message me and I would block him so he would start with the e-mails. It made me feel really bad like I wasn't even a person.

I ended up taking a lot of time off of school. I'd wake up in the morning and get really upset because I didn't want to go. My parents spoke to the school and they told me to ignore it. Well, that ignoring did nothing for me aside from making it worse.

One of the teachers told me to write down what they were saying to me and give it to her. At first I didn't want to do that because it would just make me feel like a coward. After a while I couldn't take it anymore so I did. Shortly after that the bullying stopped. It took almost a whole school year for that to happen.

This bullying by my classmates has had a lasting affect on me. I often think about it, and get really mad that people treated me that way. It's something that I will never forget.

I think that laws need to be passed about bullying. I know that some states have already done so but this needs to be a federal law.

More kids are going to end up ending their own lives because of bullying. We need to put mandatory jail time on the kids who cause that to happen. If the school knew about the bullying and didn't do anything to stop it then they should be taken to court too.

What happened to me happens to most children. If we have zero tolerance for weapons and drugs in school, why not zero tolerance for bullying? Every kid should be protected whenever possible.

If there is no money, why not have kids 2-3 grades higher watch over lower grades, to earn extra credit in school. This would cost very little, and be a good solution to spot bullies. Of course school administrators, parents, and police must do their part to punish bullies the same as they punish thieves, drug users, etc.
