Enrolling Your Elderly Family Members In A Senior Day Care Center

In Long Island, nursing facilities are plentiful. Sometimes, these facilities aren't always what we'll immediately need. Senior day care centers are different in the sense that they give the care you will need during the day, but enable you to sleep in the convenience of your home at night.

These facilities, typically referred to as adult day services, aren't limited to just offering medical care. They also focus on a person's social well-being. In fact, they are available in three kinds. You'll find centers that focus on social interaction, those which prioritize medical care, and those that are dedicated to caring for patients with Alzheimer's disease and dementia. There are a few that even go a step further and do all three. When it comes to the services and activities these organizations have to offer, the elderly are kept in mind.

What are the different types of services offered?

The objective of these facilities is not only to provide care, but also to enhance the lives of its clients. That's why they offer many services including, but are not limited to:

- Therapeutic recreation programs such as gardening, arts and crafts classes, music therapy, cooking, and occasionally pet therapy.

- Light physical fitness exercises such as stretching or jogging.

- Adult enrichment opportunities like basic computer classes and other kinds of adult education.

- Field trips - location permitting, some facilities offer guided trips to beaches, parks, or other establishments.

- Other social activities such as book clubs, film viewings, and the like.

The above-listed activities are just a few of the services provided with social interaction in mind. Besides these, facilities also provide health services that may include the following:

- Assistance with eating, walking, and toilet use.

- Simple health monitoring procedures including the checking of blood pressure, food and liquid intake, and the common checking of blood sugar for clients with diabetes.

- Short term rehab in the forms of physical, occupational, or speech therapy. Counseling and other mental health services may also be provided. This is especially true for centers that serve clients with advanced onset Alzheimer's disease or dementia.

What are the benefits of enrolling in a center rather than a nursing home?

Senior day care centers are helpful to both the client that takes part and the primary caregiver that chooses to acquire the service. For the client, they are assured of daily assisted medical care from experts. Apart from this, the recreational and educational benefits are also worth mentioning. Also, being with peers will promote socialization and a sense of preserved independence.

Taking care of the elderly around the clock can be a stressful job. Enrolling an elderly loved one in a center enables the primary caregiver to rest, and in some cases, even return to work in Long Island. Nursing homes also have been shown to be more expensive, as five day participation at a center comes for a fraction of the expense of long-term residential care. For families looking to keep their elderly loved ones safe during the day, but home during the night, adult day services are the answer.
