Why Setting Up Online Is More Important Than Ever

To those of you who have been in a deep sleep over the past five years, it will, no doubt, be painful to wake up to the reality that is the economic climate. It will make you want to jump right back into bed and have a further deep slumber for another five years in the hope that when do you wake up it was all a bad dream!

For those of us who remained awake throughout the entire ordeal, then brace yourselves, it's not over yet! We've seen the demise of our much loved high street names and well known high street shop and many other high named brands. But in comparison to other businesses this high street brand have hit the nail on the head!

After the demise of our much loved long standing store, a shopping group purchased the high street brand along with their children's clothing brand and emerged again like a phoenix in the form of an online store.

The shopping group came in at the right time. Having the former knowledge of the internet and a great marketing team, they could see the potential for the high street shops online future. The beauty of this particular example is the free press behind it all. Taking full advantage of a bad situation and turning it into a positive. When the news broke out that Woolworths were to cease trading, there was uproar among all communities nationwide. But unfortunately there was no escape plan available to help assist our beloved chain store.

As the publicity grew so too did the online searches for up to date news regarding the store. The saying remains true "no such thing as bad press" and this is a prime example that it really does work. Although former employees managed to save one store and renamed it which received free coverage thanks to BBC radio 2's Chris Evans, the high street shop name remains available online.

The shopping group that took over have led the way and paved the road to success. They have proved that online, anything can be achieved. As long as you have a solid strategy and respect that marketing online is just as important offline. They have shown that setting up shop online reduces massive overheads and can achieve a high return on investment.

More and more high street shops and even more so with smaller businesses are starting to lose their place on the high street as running costs are becoming too high to justify having a high street presence. As we start to see the internet grow ever so each day, surely it makes sense to have a presence online instead? But it's not worth much if you can't be found. If you already have an online shop it's worth investing in a website audit to enable you to create a solid website online strategy. Bring on success for 2012.
