subject: Choosing the Right Protein Powder for Your Fat Loss Goals [print this page]

Protein powder has been a staple in my supplement regimen for many years. Think about it, for the price of less than $1, I can get a full serving of protein, the equivalent of 4 ounces of chicken. It also has a favorable amino acid profile that is conducive for muscle growth and recovery. Now, there are different types of protein powders on the market today and each one does something a little bit differently. Also, each one is made differently so it's best to know which ones to use depending on what your goals are. I am going to break this down for you right here.

There are 2 main types of protein powders that are sold on the market today. You have whey protein and casein protein.

Whey protein is very fast digesting. Depending on the type of whey protein, it can take anywhere from 15 minutes to be up taken by the small intestine to an hour. With casein protein, it can take anywhere from 2 hours to 8 hours depending on the type of protein used.

If you are in need of a protein before, during or right after you workout, then your best bet is to go with whey protein. The reason being is during this anabolic time, you want your body to have that protein as fast as possible. It is primed for maximum nutrient uptake. If you are trying to use whey protein as a meal replacement, then you will find yourself getting extremely hungry really fast. One way to combat this is to combine it with carbs and fats to slow down gastric emptying.

Casein protein is the slow digesting protein like I stated before. Casein is best used for a meal replacement or a right before bed time snack. A great snack I like to have is apples with peanut butter and casein protein powder shake before I go to bed. That way I get a good source of protein, healthy fats, and fiber in my system right before I go to bed. My best recommendation would be to purchase micellar casein. The reason for this is because micellar casein is the best form of casein powder. It is very anabolic with a great amino acid profile and can last up to 8 hours within the system. It's perfect for people when they are dieting to provide a steady stream of amino acids.
