Motorhome Conversion Insurance: The Different Aspects

Motorhome conversion has now become really popular. However, one thing that everyone going for the conversion needs to know is that getting motorhome conversion insurance can be a difficult thing.

Finding insurers interested in providing this type of insurance can be a difficult job to do. This is because of the fact that most of the insurers prefer to insure motorhomes directly from the manufacturer of the vehicles and not the ones which are modified later.

So, if you do not have a factory built motorhome, you need to work a little harder to get an insurance policy for your vehicle. Insurers generally do not like to cover the vehicles modified to motorhomes by the vehicle owners because they may simply think that these modifications can be flawed and there may be a lot of risks involved.

It is because of this reason that the insurers often ask for inspection reports from engineers to consider applications for vehicles which are not factory fitted. Not every insurer has this view and there are insurers who provide insurance to those motorhome conversions which are not factory produced.

Here are some requirements which must be present with a motorhome to legally consider it as a motorhome.

If these are not present the insurance companies will not consider it for insurance policy:

1. There must be storage space for belongings and clothing.

2.There must be cooking and washing facilities.

3. There must be a decent internal configuration for bed and sitting space.

Make sure that you take these factors into consideration while converting your vehicle into a motorhome because they will help in getting insurance policy easier.

Once you have converted you vehicle into a motorhome, you must not forget to re-register the same. While doing this, you may have to go through a number of rules and regulations. For example, the MOT class and the speed limits are two very important factors which will be taken account of while re-registering the motorhome conversion. If you do not re-register and drive your motorhome, it will still be considered as a van and not a motorhome.

From the insurance aspect, you must never drive your motorhome with van insurance. This is because of the fact that the motorhome insurance has completely different requirements than that of a van. If you drive with your van insurance, the insurance cover will not be valid for the motorhome conversion and hence, consider getting motorhome conversion insurance before you take your motorhome for travelling.

Motorhome conversion may have cost you a lot and hence, your vehicles insurance value increases considerably. This calls for a different insurance policy.

It is true that not all insurers are happy to give cover for motorhome conversion but there are definitely some insurers available who will be happy to give the cover that you are looking for and hence, you must search a bit to get what you need.
