Get A Fun Job As A Clown

If you're tired of working in a cubicle, you could always become a clown. Being a clown is a fun job where you make kids and adults laugh. You get to wear baggy pants, big shoes, and a big, red nose to work. You get to create your own character as a clown.

The first thing you'll want to do is to go to clown school. Yes, clown school. That's where you'll learn the skills you'll need, like makeup, juggling, magic, making balloon animals, improv, and mime. You'll learn about wigs and costumes too. There are plenty of books on the subject, like world renowned clown teacher Alan Clay's "Angels Can Fly - A Modern Clown User's Guide". Clay runs a clown school in New Zealand and has performed all over the world.

Clowning is like acting, you can only read so much in a book before you have to just get out and do it. You'll need to create your own clown personality. You can choose to use a funny voice or not. You might not even want to speak at all. You'll need to develop a perfect balance between being clumsy and graceful at the same time. Clowns walk and talk differently. They know how to make it seem like it's natural clumsiness when it's really under control. Come up with a consistent set of traits that you can use that are unique to your clown personae. There are funny clowns and ones that are more serious. Figure out which type suits you best.

Practice every chance you get with family and friends. Get some experience working around kids at birthday parties. Practice interacting with a crowd. You have to get used to taking big risks and doing things others might be afraid to do. Watch some episodes of Red Skelton. Go watch other clowns in action. Talk to them and get their advice.

There are many different types of clowns. You could work for a regular circus or one like Cirque du Soleil. There are Shriner clowns and clowns that work in hospitals and for kid's birthday parties. Corporations hire clowns. And if you don't get a regular clown job, you'll have to get used to the hustle of always looking for work, just like any other artist.

There's more to being a clown than just making funny faces and wearing a costume. You also have to have it in your heart to be a clown. But for those who hate being stuck in an office cubicle all day it sounds like the perfect fun job.
