The Changing Face Of Personal Training

I remember when I began working as a Personal Trainers over 14 years ago, it was very much a niche profession. At dinner parties when the conversation would turn to jobs, people would ask "So what do you do for a living?" I would always tell them keenly "I'm a personal trainer! the response was always the same, "Oh that sounds interesting, do you train anyone famous?"

Of course the reality for me and most other Personal Trainers is a far cry from the conventional view that many still have of our profession. Tanned body-beautiful fitness trainers jogging effortlessly along the beach with an equally beautiful Hollywood superstar! Whilst I always find this image of what we supposedly all do every day to be somewhat patronizing, this popular perception of our Industry has certainly not done us any harm. In fact it has largely fuelled the rapid growth of the Corporate Fitness training Industry since I first began, helping it to become both a popular career choice and an equally popular pursuit for those wanting to get fit and achieve the bodies of their favorite celebrity.

When I qualified 14 years ago there was very little choice in terms of courses and qualifications. Today there are literally hundreds of personal training qualifications and diplomas to choose from. What's more, there are now fitness trade bodies for our profession who provide help and advice for personal trainers, whilst imposing strict codes of practice in order to maintain standards within the fitness Industry. Nothing like this existed when I first begin upon my fitness career. For many years my biggest challenge was to get people to take my profession seriously. Even my family struggled to take my career choice seriously for years! Finally it seems that the Industry has turned a corner, and the result is that we are seeing more and more quality career professionals entering the Industry. There are personal trainers that now specialize in a range of disciplines from back pain management, to postnatal exercise to fitness for seniors to injury rehabilitation. More young people entering the Industry are now choosing to follow degrees in Sports Science and in so doing, take their knowledge to a whole new level with specialist qualifications and training courses. This makes me very proud to be a part of such an exciting Industry and I am reputable to work with so many great personal fitness trainers every day.

So what is the future for the personal training Industry? I believe it will continue to attract even greater numbers of career personal trainers who have the wish to constantly improve their knowledge and understanding - making it a profession to be proud of. With levels of fatness unhappy still rising to new outbreak levels, it seems the demand for personal training will surely continue to rise for many years to come.
The Changing Face Of Personal Training

I began my career in fitness because I wanted to make an otherness to people's lives and today that wish to help others is stronger than ever. It is a wish that is followed by millions of personal trainers around the globe and as the Industry has matured and grown it will continue to attract more and more fitness-minded professionals looking to forge a career that rewards, challenges and engages us every single day.
