Dogs Prone To Degenerative Myelopathy

When choosing a breed, future dog owners need to consider how the dogs health is. Some dogs are very prone to certain illnesses while others are not. One of the most common disease big dogs have is degenerative myelopathy. Dm in dogs commonly happens when the dog is a little older. This illness targets the nerves of the dogs back legs and paws. Symptoms commonly start out as the dog dragging its paws when it walks, then progresses to the loss of control of the back legs. Dm in dogs results in paralysis. Although the dog does not seem to feel pain, its going to be a very big problem for it to move around.

Here are some breeds that are prone to degenerative myelopathy.

German Shepherds

These big, active dogs are the most prone to degenerative myelopathy. Known for their intelligence and their loyalty, germen shepherds are one of the most loved breeds. They are usually used for guard dogs, family dogs, the K9 unit, bomb sniffers, and other military and police roles. Dm on these dogs will place them out of there vital roles as guardians.

Labrador Retrievers

These dogs are one of the most popular breeds for family dogs. Friendly and playful, Labrador Retrievers are commonly taken in as house dogs. Some are also used as bomb and drug sniffers since they are very easy to train. They are good gun dogs, or bird dogs. Dog owners use to bring Labrador Retrievers to bring back birds that they have hunted and shot down.

Siberian Huskies

Originating from Siberia, these dogs are commonly known as sled dog, Siberian huskies can stand the freezing temperature of Alaska and Siberian Arctic. These dogs are still used as working dogs until now. Pulling sleds and guarding their owners. these dogs where once thought to only survive in colder areas, but Siberian huskies are now found all over the world.

Boxers

These dogs originated in Germany and where once used as hunting companion dogs. Named after the boxing gloves like shape of their paws, Boxers are medium sized dogs that have short hair and a powerful bite. They are very fast and are friendly towards people they know. They also make good guard dogs.

Dm in dogs has caused so many families to say goodbye to their beloved pets. But with proper care, even if the dog has DM, they can still live a normal and happy life when they grow old.
