How To Get By Till The Next Pay Day

Managing your income is not a subject taught in school and is just one of life's learning curves that we all hopefully will eventually get right but even then there may be times when some unexpected emergency comes along and we do not have the cash to hand.

Before the big slump of the early nineteen nineties it was incredibly easy to open a bank account and if necessary apply for an overdraft but all that has changed dramatically.

As an example of how easy it used to be I have a personal story to back this up. Fed up with the bank I had been with for ten years and running a one man business with an erratic income I happened to move to a different part of the country and thought I would use the opportunity to hunt around for another bank.

At the time there was only a couple of hundred pounds in the account and when I walked in and asked to see the manager of this other bank I took a year's supply of bank statements. Like something out of a comedy sketch the portly old manager offered a chair and then talked about cricket which we obviously shared a passion for.

This was ten in the morning and he opened his bottom desk drawer and pulled out a bottle of Sherry and two glasses.

Eventually we got to the purpose of my visit and I asked if I could open a bank account. He asked for any business plan which I didn't have but I handed over a year's supply of statements from the old bank.

He thumbed at speed through the whole bunch of perhaps a hundred pages and said something about a lot of money seems to be coming in then thumbed through a second time and remarked that a lot went out and he happened to see one or two payments to a wine dealer so we talked some more cricket and wine.

He rang downstairs and asked one of the tellers to take my details to set up an account and here is the unbelievable part of the tale and impossible to imagine nowadays; I cheekily asked if I could start with a five thousand pound overdraft and without a flinch he picked up the phone to the same teller and told her to put an overdraft for that amount available on the account which I could collect in cash two days later.

Can you imagine that scene today? To begin with managers don't really exist anymore and nobody at branch level can authorise an overdraft. Bank managers are now humourless teetotallers and getting to see one is impossible and nearly as impossible as opening a new account.

Banks are scared to lend money but with instant payday loans elsewhere at least that emergency can be sorted. With a full understanding of the terms these emergency cash payments can even be made the same day into your account.
