subject: Tips To Give That Perfect Wedding Speech [print this page]

Giving speeches during ceremonies and different occasions is an enduring tradition, and nothing is probably more popular other than wedding speeches.

Now, not everyone is a gifted speaker, especially in public. So, what would you do if you have to make a speech at your sisters wedding?

You may not be born with the flair for public speaking, but you can certainly learn and acquire the basic skills to help you make it through your sisters wedding day.

Here are some pointers.

* Keep it short and simple

Several people give speeches at weddings, so it is best to keep your speech under five minutes. You wouldnt bore the audience and you wouldnt be forced to stand before them for a long time.

* Share an anecdote

This is proven and tested. Pick one or two good stories you know about the couple and share them during your speech. A little humor can also spice things up. Just make sure you have the comedic timing to pull it off, and always choose appropriate jokes.

* Put your speech on paper

It wouldnt hurt to jot down your speech, especially for someone who isnt used to giving them. But during the big day, you dont need the entire speech with you. A simple outline containing the main points of your speech will suffice.

* Rehearse

Practicing will not only prepare you technically in terms of proper breathing, intonation, enunciation, pacing, etc., it will also allow you to memorize your speech by heart. In this way, your delivery will sound more natural and sincere.

* Speak loudly

Microphones are normally provided for speakers. Keep your mouth five to eight inches away from the microphone and talk in your normal range. Now, if no microphone is available, you simply take a deep breath and raise your voice a little. Never shout nor hold your breath while talking.

* Enunciate and intonate properly

Know which words or phrases need emphasis and identify in what tone they should be delivered. Dont ruin your speech by sounding dull and monotonous.

* Be conversational

Wedding speeches are supposed to be heart-warming, delightful and casual, so deliver your speech as if you are talking to a friend.

* Inspect the venue

Some people get overwhelmed by the size of the venue. So if possible, visit the venue beforehand to have an idea how big it is and how many people youd probably be talking to. If allowed, practice your speech there.

* Make a good impression

Get your audiences attention by showing that you are confident and comfortable to stand before them. Straighten your back, relax your shoulders and keep your feet slightly apart for balance and of course dress appropriately. This will boost your self-esteem.

* Dont drink alcohol

Drinking alcohol before your speech is a big no-no. It is always advisable to be sober before and during your speech.

* Make a connection

Its a basic rule in public speaking that you maintain strong eye contact with your audience. Since weddings are family affairs and you are familiar with most of your audience, then take advantage of that and dont be scared to connect with them.

* Be appropriate

Always be mindful not to share embarrassing and awkward personal stories.

* Make a wish for the couple

Since your wedding speech is primarily for the couple, its contents must always be related to them. And of course, dont forget to wish them the best.
