subject: How To Create A Garden That The Whole Family Can Enjoy [print this page]

First of all, if you want to keep the garden looking natural then why not get the children to help you create it. This way they will feel like it is their garden too and as they grow up they will learn all about how to create a lovely garden. It can also be a good idea to create things in the garden that keep them occupied, maybe allocate a space that is theres to look after and to decide what grows there.

There are also many products on the market that help to create a natural and chic looking space that functions very well as a place for the kids. For example, you can purchase old railway sleepers for use in the garden, they are strong and durable and give the garden a lovely rustic look but at the same time can be used to build and create things that serve a purpose. They are a great way to make garden dividers which will differentiate the different parts of the garden as those for the kids to use, those for the adults to relax in and perhaps even areas that the whole family can enjoy.

Railway sleepers can also be used to create structures in the garden that are both in keeping with the look of the garden and fun for the children. For example, kids love a sandpit and many people opt for a plastic one that starts its life colourful and shiny but after a summer of use and being battered by British weather they begin to look a bit sorry for themselves. You can use Railway sleepers to build a sandpit that fits nicely into a natural rustic looking garden and when the kids grow out of it you can transform it into a lovely flower bed. You could also be really inventive and build the kids a den of sorts out of sleepers which can act as a hideaway for them on ground level which is safe and practical.

Even after all of this there is still likely to be lots of bright plastic toys creeping in and threatening to ruin the ambience of the garden. This would be a good time to think about storage. Toy boxes do not necessarily have to be for inside. Why not buy (or build) a large and durable wooden chest that can safely stow away all of the outdoor play things that should not be left out overnight. This also keeps them safe from the elements.

So if you are thinking that having children means saying goodbye to a chic, sophisticated and relaxing area, fear not there are ways to keep your identity and keep your garden from becoming a wasteland of coloured plastic.
