subject: Buying Watches as Gifts [print this page]

Watches carry the significance of time and eternity with them, thus making them excellent as gifts for any occasion. Be it an employee of the month or your significant other, watches tell the receiver that they mean a lot to you. As with any gift, you have to keep the person in mind when you are buying the watch. Watches are extremely personal items and hence you need to choose them carefully when buying one. But it need not be a very complicated exercise. Just think of what the person is like and look for the closest match in the watches that you have in front of you.

One trick is to carefully observe what kind of things the person wears on their hand rings, bracelets, watches and look for a pattern. Perhaps the person goes for really minimal designs or may be he or she's in to flowery patterns and alternative materials. This will give you a nice lead in to what kind of a watch that person might like. On an average, younger people will try to keep up with trends and wear bold colors and shapes while older ones will try to go with the classic look without too much experimentation.

Businessmen will usually just want something that will go with their formals or casuals and look sober and sophisticated. There will of course be exceptions to this, so again go back to what kind of a person it is that you are buying the watch for. Specific part of the watch are also determining factors about who will look best wearing it. Men usually wear watches with broad wristbands and a thick texture while women would generally go for the sleek designs that are elegant and somewhat ornate. But there are also very beautiful watches that have thick bands and are intended for women.

Leather as a material is good fit for those looking for a little rugged feel in a men's watch. Or if it is really well made, it can look very urban and sleek on women. However, leather bands should be quite narrow to look good on women and must be somewhat broad to look good on men. Steel as a material gives the watch a sleek and industrial look. It is not a very crafting friendly metal, so steel watches have more straight lines and sharp edges. They are meant to be minimal in nature and will hardly be very decorated. Steel watches are a good fit for men and women in serious professions who want to exude confidence and strength.

Silver and gold are used in almost all styles of watches, be it very simple or very ornate. They go beautifully with precious and semi-precious stones. But they are also the most expensive options. However, since these watches are usually assets that last a long time, they might be well worth the money that you will be spending on them. And the person who is special enough to receive the gift will be all the more impressed with your effort.
