5 Great Italian White Wines Online

Italian Whites seem to be very in vogue right now and deservedly so. Here are five Italian white wines well worth trying and also a great place to buy white wine online.

As Italians drink more wine per head than anywhere else in the world including France although in terms of production Italy is someway behind la belle France it's hardly surprising that so many great wines are exported from her shores. Italy has many wine growing regions producing famous red and white wines some more so than others - who hasn't heard of Prosecco or Chianti ? Here are 5 superb Italian whites for you to enjoy.

Gavi. The village of Gavi in the illustrious region of Piedmont produces the very of the moment Gavi wines. Made from the strictly controlled Cortese grape these are crisp, refreshing wines which stay within the classic 12-13% alcohol range and are superb food friendly wines with herby, citrus characteristics - great with seafood or creamy chicken dishes. Elegant white wines in a good variety of guises.

Pinot Grigio. Another very fashionable white wine is the Pinot Grigio. Produced in the Lombardy region these are light and refreshing wines and although produced in many countries, sales of the Italian products have overtaken those of France and America. They are light and refreshing, uncomplicated wines and are also generally inexpensive and come in a good number of subtly differing expressions.

Soave. A dry white wine hailing from the northeastern Veneto region. At one time Soave was more popular even than Chianti but the mighty Pinot Grigio has since overtaken it in the popularity stakes. Once produced to have a similar medium body and style as Chardonnay, Soave has developed a much more individual character over the years and is now a fresh fruity quite dry wine to be enjoyed on its own or with fish or seafood. Spend a little more for a good one as a cheap "commodity" soave can be a little nasty.

Prosecco. Italy's very own Champagne. A light, summery sparkling wine that is refreshing but at the same time has a little depth. The name refers to both the grape (which as an ancient variety has many alternate names ( Giera being the best known) and the wine. Prosecco is available in white or rose wine styles and is relatively dry. It's a great alternative to champagne and has the additional advantage of being generally less expensive.

Verdicchio. This is a dry, medium-bodied, crisp white with mineral flavours and a sea-air freshness. Often a distinctive straw yellow colour, verdicchio can be a fascinating wine with elegant bouquets of citrus and pineapple - a great match with a seafood salad on a sunny day.

When you buy white wine online you'll be able to choose from a fabulously wide selection of these superb Italian numbers.
