What To Look For When Buying A Used Car

Buying a used car can be a tricky business without knowledge of motor vehicles. So the first piece of advice is never to buy something that does not feel right. If there are any doubts or worries about the condition of the car or the price, it is always a good idea to get a friend or family member to help with the purchase. It is also a good idea to try and take the vehicle for a test drive, if possible, as this will highlight many potential problems that the car may have.

There are a few key things to look out for when buying a used car, and some good questions to ask in order to find out more about condition of the car. Whether purchasing privately or through a car dealership, the process should be the same. If the appropriate questions are not asked the information may not be forthcoming. These questions include; how many owners has the vehicle had? Has it been involved in an accident in the past? What is the mileage? Does it have any ongoing problems or need any minor repairs? A close inspection of the vehicle may reveal some of the answers to the questions, such as the mileage.

It is always a good idea to look through the service history of a used car, as this will show whether it has been well looked after, and what maintenance work has been carried out on the vehicle. If purchasing from a private buyer and they do not have a service log, and are not very helpful in answering questions about the car, it may not be a good idea to buy it, as one cannot be sure what condition it is in. If purchasing from a car dealership, enquire about the warranty length, and aftercare that is offered. Most good dealerships these days offer a comprehensive parts warranty for at least six months, as they want to provide a good service and build a reputation for trustworthy used car sales.

Some manufacturers and models of car are renowned for being reliable and long lasting, so it is worth conducting research on a particular car to find out a little more information about it. It is also a good idea to establish the average resale price of the car so a fair price can be judged.
