Modern Family the Last Walt Review

It has been long established in the previous episodes (even seasons) that Luke is not like most kids. But Claire and Phil (especially Claire) still get a bit worried at Lukes reaction when told of the news that his neighbor-friend, Walt has died. What probably worried Claire so much is the fact that Luke seems emotionless about the whole thing. But what is more intriguing in this episodes sub-story is the weird smile Claire has on her face when she broke the news of Walts death to Luke and other people like the Meals-on-Wheels lady and the mailman. It turns out it was her own way of coping with sad news.

Walts departure made Phil realize that life is too short and that he has not yet spent much time with Alex. So Phil and Alex go off into a day of adventure to create memories together. First, they go to the ocean to throw Walts dog tags but a colony of seagulls fly off with the dog tags. Then they drive 50 miles to a diner famous for serving the worlds best milkshake, only to discover that the milkshake machine is out of order that day. But being the optimistic and determined father that he is, Phil still manages to conjure up an idea that resulted in a father-and-daughter bonding both he and Alex will never forget. And just like the cool dad Eugene Cernan who wrote his daughters initials on the moons surface, Phil writes Alexs initials beside the moon symbol of the Moonbeam Diner signage.

Meanwhile, Cams dad, Merle Tucker arrives for a visit. Jay and Merle have a mutual dislike for each other. Jay admits that he doesnt like Merle treating Mitchell as the woman in the Cam-Mitchell relationship and Merle doesnt like Jay because Jay always turns grouchy at his kind gestures. Even though Jay tries to avoid meeting Merle by making an excuse that he is sick, Mitchell and Cam manages to give their dads the time and space they need to sort out their problems and straighten out their issues with one another. In the end, both Merle and Jay come to a conclusion that when it comes to their sons relationship, Mitchell and Cam are equals.

As for Haley, knowing that Gloria and Jay will be at Mitchell and Cams place, she successfully gets Glorias consent to throw a pool party over at Jays. Haley pulls it off when she tells them that she will be chaperoned by her uncle. But that uncle turns out to be Manny! Well technically, Manny is, indeed her uncle. But Manny turns out to be a little crankier and stricter than Jay and even Mitchell and Cam. Manny forces everyone to wipe off their feet before entering the house, then he prohibits everyone from going upstairs, and he monitors everyones drinking by seizing and removing alcoholic drinks. It definitely was not the type of party Haley had in mind.

Overall, there were a lot of sweet, funny and heartfelt moments in this episode - just like how Modern Family episodes are supposed to be.
