subject: Discolored Smile? Fix It With A Teeth Whitening Procedure [print this page]

Are you unhappy with the how your teeth look? Do your discolored teeth make you hesitate to smile? If the answer is yes, then you may want to look into pursuing a teeth whitening procedure. Over the years, teeth whitening technology has developed to the point that your dentist will be able to significantly whiten your smile in a relatively short amount of time. If you are unhappy with your smile, talk to your dentist about a teeth whitening procedure today.

In-Office Whitening

The quickest and most effective method for whitening your teeth is to have your dentist perform the procedure in a single appointment in his or her office. After discussing with your dentist to make sure that you are a candidate for in-office whitening, he or she will begin the procedure by evenly applying whitening solution to the front of your teeth. After doing this, he or she will usually apply a special light or laser to your teeth that will activate the hydrogen peroxide in the gel, which is the ingredient that physically changes the color of your teeth. Generally your dentist will then repeat this process a few times to complete the procedure. All in all, the process will be completed in less than two hours. After it is over, you will be free to walk out of your dentist's office and start enjoying your new smile. This option can be helpful for patients that are looking to get a large amount of whitening in a small amount of time.

Take Home Whitening

Another popular option that you can use to whiten your teeth is to do so with a take home whitening kit that you receive from your dentist. In this method, your dentist will take detailed impressions of your teeth to create customized whitening trays that you will take home with you. Once you are at home, you will apply whitening gel to the trays and wear them on your teeth for about an hour. After doing this every day for two weeks, your teeth will have gotten much whiter. Some take home kits require you to wear the kits at night, but results are comparable for each method. As this is generally cheaper, this method is good for patients who want significant whitening, but don't want to spend the money on an in office whitening procedure.

Over The Counter Products

Whitening strips, gels and toothpastes are easily available at your local drugstore. However, because they do not contain high concentrations of hydrogen peroxide and they are not customized to you, they do not offer the same results as dentist approved methods. But for patients who are only looking for a small amount of whitening or do not want to spend a great deal of money, an over the counter product may be the right option.
