subject: A Guide For Online Dating: How To Catch A Date On The Web [print this page]

In this day and age it can be difficult to meet people to date. While you can find plenty of people at pubs and bars, many of the people you meet there are more interested in hooking up than having a relationship. However, there are many dating sites on the internet that will allow you to meet people looking for something serious. There are some advantages and disadvantages to meeting people through online dating sites though.

The advantages are obvious. To begin with, you can specifically search for people that share your interests and are compatible with you. Additionally, if you start chatting with someone and you are not hitting it off, cutting things off is far simpler than someone you have met with face to face. And even if you are shy, chatting and emailing back and forth takes a lot of the pressure away from talking to someone for the first time. When you use online relationship sites, you spend time dating only the people you have a connection with.

Still, as with anything that offers large rewards, there are several drawbacks to online dating sites. Anyone can put up a profile and pretend to be someone. That creates the possibility of communicating with someone with bad intentions. You need to be very careful about sharing information with someone until you know they are safe. When you do decide to go forward with meeting someone in person, make sure you do so in a public setting and do not allow them to pick you up. People who have nothing to hide will understand your precautions.

One of the most common mistakes people make when using online meeting sites is they fib or stretch the truth. This is not done to take advantage of people, but to make themselves look more appealing. While it is understandable, creating a false premise is only going to cause problems in the long run.

Make sure you post a recent photo that accurately resembles how you look now. This is not to say you have to post a picture in sweatpants with un-brushed hair; of course, you want to look your best. Just look your best as you are currently. Another thing to remember is to not post interests and skills that you do not have. If you do not have genuine enthusiasm for camping or interpretive dance, you'll end up spending a lot of time faking it.

So, if you are honest and careful, you will almost surely find someone you can form a relationship with online.
