subject: Pediatric Dentists For The Whole Family [print this page]

General Pediatric dentists are also known as "pedodontists". This article will just call them general pediatric dentists though. General pediatric dentists focus their dental services on the family and especially children. Since dental development and dental issues of children are different from adult dental development and dental issues, a pediatric dentists must specialize in pediatric dentistry studies after their general dentistry schooling is complete. General pediatric dentists are required to complete general dentistry schooling along with other general dentist students and then go on to specialize and study pediatric dentistry to be able to provide dental services to children. This means that the entire family can also receive dental care and preventative cleaning, etc. from the same general pediatric dentists as the children in the family receive care from. This is convenient so that the entire family can make an appointment on the same day and visit the dentists office all at the same time.

The reason for general pediatric dentists to study more selective dentistry skills after completing the general dentistry training is that children require different dental care than adult dental care. One of the best examples is that children have their local baby teeth falling out and being replaced by their local adult teeth which necessitates the understanding of general pediatric dentists in resolving dental issues that may occur during the process this dental stage for children. The dental treatment and dental care for dental diseases in children must be different as well.

Pediatric dentists must use different treatment techniques for a child dental patient and at the same time be able to explain the problem and the solution to both the child and the child's family or rather parents. General pediatric dentists must know what dosage of dental medications to give or local anesthesia to use on children that would not harm the child. If general pediatric dentists gave the same dosage of local anesthesia to a child as the dentists give to adults, there would be a problem.

General pediatric dentists usually make their dentistry office family friendly as well especially in the way general pediatric dentists and the dentistry team communicate with the entire family, both children and the parents. This is why pediatric dentists must also have some training in child psychology and family communications to provide adequate dental care for children. Dentistry work is not only about the details of dental cleaning and preventative care, it's about dentists communicating with their local dental patients and providing general dental information and dental education about dental hygiene habits in a tactful way. Also, since children may have heightened fears of the dentists office and dentists tools, general pediatric dentists must help their family patients feel at ease. General pediatric dentists must understand from a child's perspective what coming to the dentists must be like. Explaining how dental tools work and what dental cleaning will be done by the dentists is only part of helping children and family dental patient's visits to the dentistry flow smoothly.

General pediatric dentists not only provide dental support to a family with children, but also to a family with disabled children or handicapped adults. General pediatric dentists are trained in helping a family with the dental care of those dental patients who need extra dental care.
