Freight In The Shipping Industry Can Take Many Forms

When you have products that must be shipped, you may utilize a number of shipping methods in order to meet all of your customers' needs. For instance, urgent deliveries may require express freight, while less urgent shipments could use a local freight carrier. Small loads could be sent by courier while medium loads may require LTL shipment and large loads need the services of an FTL carrier. Because many businesses need all of these types of services, they must be integrated into the logistics strategy that you use.

Express Freight Shipping

No matter what your product is, there will be times when the client requires express freight shipping for immediate delivery. Most of the time, your logistics manager can organize the supply chain so that this is not necessary, but when it is you want to use a reliable shipper that has reputation for getting the shipment quickly to its destination no matter what size the cargo is.

Local Carriers

When your customers are local or regional, local carriers are often the best because they have set routes and reasonable prices. In addition, the drivers will often build a rapport with both the shipper and the customer that helps to make the whole process flow more smoothly.

Courier

Couriers are perfect for packages under 100 pounds and usually have reasonable delivery schedules that can be worked into your logistics strategies. Even companies that normally ship large loads will have occasional parcels that need to be delivered by courier.

LTL Shipping

When you have medium sized loads that are larger than parcels but do not fill an entire trailer, you will be using an LTL carrier in order to maximize your costs. This means that your shipment will be combined with other shipments as the truck picks up additional deliveries until the truck is full. This is usually much more economical than paying for a full truck with a smaller load.

FTL shipping

When you have large loads that fill an entire trailer, you will use FTL shipping for the greatest economy. Your logistics manager will work with the appropriate carriers to assure that your load is delivered in a timely manner.

A comprehsive and thorough logistics strategy will usually incorporate all of these methods and include electronic tracking of your shipments so that you are always on top of which shipment is in transit and when it arrives at its destination.
