subject: Shipping Concerns For The Freight Industry [print this page]

Although the recent global recession did have a negative impact on individual components of the freight industry, it has remained relatively strong overall due to the fact that businesses will always require a way to get their products to their customers. In fact, the global market that has become available through increased use of the internet and the ability of consumers to purchase items from practically anywhere has actually created a different set of shipping concerns.

Expansion Concerns

As more products are shipped to and from more locations, there are concerns within the industry about the changes that are needed to maintain the current level of growth. Consumers can shop practically any time of the day or night, and expect their items to be delivered to them within a reasonable amount of time. Currently, the shipping industry's infrastructure is able to handle the shipping needs that are being placed upon it. However, it is being used nearly to its full capacity, and if the industry wants to continue to expand, additional infrastructure will be necessary.

Financing New Infrastructure

In order to build new infrastructure, someone has to pay the bills. Many shipping companies lack the capital necessary for such a venture and may not be able to get sufficient financing. If government entities do not see an immediate need to build new roads, seaports, railroads or airports if they can't connect it to immediate profit, they may not be willing to foot the bill. Even if governments are willing to move forward with these types of projects or if shipping and freight companies have the capital or can get the financing, it takes time to build the new railroads, highways or ports. This time factor will definitely impact the rate of growth of the shipping industry. In other words, the longer it takes for building to begin on infrastructure projects, the longer it will be before growth in the shipping industry can continue.

Other Shipping Concerns

One of the other main concerns that the shipping industry must face is the environmental footprint that is being created. There are engineers who are working on more efficient engines for all modes of transportation, and many people are working to eliminate waste from the industry. There is quite a bit of research that needs to be done on the negative environmental impact of certain aspects of this industry and how it can be reduced.
