Why Take Your Kids To A Pediatric Dentist

What's the difference between a pediatric dentist and a general/family practice dentist? The main difference between a pediatric dentist and a general/family practice dentist is that a pediatric dentist works with kids. A pediatric dentist has dental school training just like a general/family practice dentist, but a pediatric dentist takes more dental school training to learn the specific dental needs and dental issues that kids have.

Kids have a whole different set of dental concerns and dental problems that can occur with their kids teeth falling out and their adult teeth growing in, children need a specialized dentist for their local dental needs and this dentist is called a pediatric dentist. A pediatric dentist doesn't only study the dental issues and dental needs of children, but a pediatric dentist is trained in dental school how to reach kids and their parents.

A pediatric dentist must know how to talk to kids on their level and understand how to treat dental patients differently because the dental patients of a pediatric dentist are kids, not adults or teenagers. So, a pediatric dentist also receives training in kids psychology and kids communication skills. A pediatric dentist should have a dentistry that is geared to kids even the choice of dentistry decor within a pediatric dentist office is geared to keep kids happy and entertained while they receive dental care. I remember my own pediatric dentist still to this day, thirty years after... I remember the funny cartoon comics on the ceiling above the kids dental chair. So, when the pediatric dentist leaned the dental chair back so he could see my teeth he would tell me to look at the pictures on the ceiling. There were also stickers for those dental visits to reward the children who sat through a dental visit. There were fun mural paintings on the dentistry walls and much more that made going to the pediatric dentist office fun for kids.

Why should I take my kids to a pediatric dentist rather than our general/family practice dentist? Well, if the above memories don't convince you of why you should take your kids to a pediatric dentist let me say that the above memories have been my past dental hygiene habits formed. Of course dental hygiene habits are encouraged and started at home, but it always helps to go to the pediatric dentist where kids get rewards and dentist attention just for their dental needs. Of course it takes the routine of a parent's dental hygiene habits to create the dental hygiene habits of their children, but parents can have good dental hygiene and still not have children with good dental hygiene.

Taking your kids to the pediatric dentist can help to form good dental hygiene habits for your kids which in turn helps them to have good dental health and good overall health. Another reason to take your kids to the pediatric dentist is that the pediatric dentist can help kids to enjoy the dentist visits rather than fear them. You don't want your kids to grow up with a huge fear of going to the dentist and avoid the dentist visits all their lives. Kids can learn to enjoy the dentist's routine cleanings with the help of a pediatric dentist.
