Toothache is caused due to tooth decay and sometimes due to any kind of infection. Tooth decay is the result of poor dental hygiene whereas the tendency to get tooth decay is partially inherited. Tooth decay leads to characteristic pain, which is unbearable. Many times pain that is felt in the tooth is referred pain or radiating pain i.e. it is caused due to pain in other parts of the body such as earache may sometimes cause toothache.

The various referred pains that cause toothache are:

If the toothache is minor it can be cured by taking pain killer. Take care of your oral hygiene to prevent toothache, adapt low sugar diet along with regular flossing; sugar may cause cavity especially if taken at night. Brushing with fluoride toothpaste and regular professional cleansing is must. Sealants and fluoride application by dentist are important to prevent toothache. If you face severe toothache along with fever and earache while opening the mouth and if the pain lasts for more than a day or two consult the dental specialist for treatment. Your dentist may advise to go for some or the other pain killer or antibiotic therapy and other treatment like root canal.

Dentistry is the branch of science that involves the study, medicines, diagnosis, and treatment, prevention of disease, disorder and condition of the oral cavity. Besides, the degree dentist needs to pursue training so as to carry out more complex treatment such as sedation, oral and maxillofacial surgery and dental implants.

Dentists suggest prevention of oral disease by proper hygiene and regular, twice yearly checkups of teeth and professional cleansing and evaluation. Evidently, many dental diseases lead to other health related problems like heart disease, diabetes, preterm birth.
