A new program called "Summer Jobs+" is designed to create nearly 180,000 jobs for low-income youth this coming summer. President Obama announced the program, which is a collaborative effort between businesses, non-profits, and government. "America's young people face record unemployment, and we need to do everything we can to make sure they've got the opportunity to earn the skills and a work ethic that come with a job," President Obama said. Participating businesses include AT&T, Bank of America, CenturyLink, CVS Caremark, Gap Inc., Jamba Juice, Starbucks Coffee Company, UPS, and many others.
Teens Don't Want to be President
After a back and forth race in Iowa among Republican candidates for president, former senator Rick Santorum won the first-in-the-nation caucuses by a mere 34 votes over former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney. In the next contest, however, Romney scored a convincing win in New Hampshire. In South Carolina, former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich took the win. With three different winners in the first three contests, it's hard to predict who might be the eventual nominee for president. Meanwhile, a new poll reveals that nearly eighty percent of teens have no interest in becoming president when they reach adulthood. What about you? Would you want the job? Get it Right : The King Memorial
A change made to save space caused an uproar, and now the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial in Washington D.C. is going to get a correction. The memorial was introduced with these words etched in granite: "I was a drum a major of justice, peace, and righteousness." But the civil rights leader actually said, "If you want to say I was a drum major, say that I was a drum major for justice. Say that I was a drum major for peace" Interior Secretary Ken Salazar instructed the National Parks Service to make the correction.
Obama Proposes Combining Agencies
President Obama believes the country could save $3 billion over the next ten years by combining parts of the federal government. The hope is that by consolidating six agencies--the Small Business Administration, the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative, the Export-Import Bank, the Overseas Private Investment Corporation, and the Trade and Development Agency--the government could become more efficient. The newly created agency would result in the cutting of more than 1,000 government jobs. Republicans, who are traditionally in favor of smaller government and less waste, have nevertheless criticized the plan for not being aggressive enough.
