subject: Why There Are So Many Girls Left On The Shelf In Beijing? [print this page]

According to 2010 census data, there have been more than 0.50 million single ladies over 28 years old. They are described as left on the shelf, representing a trend in the Chinese cities, that is, more and more high-educated and economically independent ladies have purposefully postponed their marriage because of personal reasons and professional reasons.

In China, a country where marriage and family have been attached very great importance to, parents are not in favor of their daughters late marriage.

Xiao Suowei, a sociology professor at Beijing Normal University specializing in marriage and family relations said: "Chinese people attach great importance to the family culture, and the parents would consider for the future of their children in the next 20 years ", she added that if the daughter has not yet got married before the age of 30, the parents will be worried about the possibility that the daughter may not be suitable for fertility as the age is too large. They will be troubled with the issue that no man is willing to marry the daughter or even afraid that the daughter can not enjoy the family life without a child.

Although the gender imbalance in rural China is very serious, but since the eighties of last century, in the big cities in Beijing, the male to female ratio was only slightly higher than the international average. In Beijing girls born in the 1980s have not enjoyed the advantage of being less than boys.

The parents of these singe ladies have already got married and begun raising children in their early 20s. However, in today's Chinese society, the single ladies professional success can earn more face than the marriage situation for their parents. This will be a huge challenge to traditional family value.

Chinese children still grow up to accept China's traditional ideology, attaching great importance to the views of parents, even if the children have become adults, they can not withstand criticism from parents. Therefore, they will have blind dates with the boys that their parents recommend.

Nevertheless, in the Chinese society where a young woman is often criticized because of the pursuit of material possession in the marriage, many single ladies are still looking for their own Mr Right. They stick to the spiritual harmony with the potential spouse and hope to find such a guy who can understand them in the future. Even though times change, they still insist on the ideal of their own marriage.
