subject: Natural Treatments Against Hemorrhoids [print this page]

Various factors can contribute to the development of hemorrhoids, including straining during bowel movements and constipation. Most women experience having hemorrhoids during the course of pregnancy and this is because of the increased pressure from the fetus inside the womb. Standing or sitting for an extended period can also cause the condition. The risk of having hemorrhoids may increase due to age because as an individual grow older, elasticity of the skins and tissues is reduced, thus lessening the support on the veins.

However, you should know that there are home treatments available for hemorrhoids conditions. Some of these home treatments include the following:

* Using sitz bath can help reduce inflammation and itching due to hemorrhoids. This bathing seat can easily fit over the toilet seat and can be purchased from your local pharmacy. Alternatively, you can just fill your bathtub with lukewarm water and soak your bottom to it for at least 10 to 20 minutes. You can repeat both methods several times a day or after moving bowels. Following a sitz bath, make sure to dry the anal area immediately but avoid removing it to prevent irritating the hemorrhoids.

* Applying ice on the affected area or using OTC creams that contain lidocaine can help relieve the pain due to its numbing effect. There are creams and suppositories that contain hydrocortisone and these can be used for the condition. You can apply these once a week to relieve itching and irritation.

* Witch hazel is another effective relief against the symptoms of hemorrhoids. You can simply apply this using cotton balls to relieve itching. Since this does not come with any side effects, you can use it whenever you are experiencing painful symptoms of hemorrhoids and itching.

* Make sure to always keep the anal area clean. You can do this by washing it with warm water. However, avoid using soap to prevent irritation. Following a bowel movement, you can wipe the anal area using baby wipes instead of toilet paper.

* Always wear cotton undergarments to prevent itching when suffering from hemorrhoids. Always sit on a cushioned seat to reduce the pressure within the anal area and the formation of hemorrhoids.

* Certain lifestyle changes are also necessary against the condition. Some changes that you can opt for are the following:

* Add more fiber into your diet by consuming lots of fruits, vegetables and whole grains like bran and wheat. Fiber supplements are also helpful. Aside from adding more fiber to your diet, ensure that you are consuming sufficient amount of water daily. Opt for at least 8 to 10 glasses of water per day to keep your stools soft and prevent straining during bowel movements.

* Carry out daily exercises to stimulate the function of your digestive system and prevent constipation. Staying active can reduce the pressure within the anal and rectal are and this can help you maintain a normal body weight.

* In case your hemorrhoids condition is not responsive to any of these, it might be necessary to opt for the surgical removal of the affected veins. You just have to visit your physician for a diagnosis of the hemorrhoids and to determine whether it is internal or external hemorrhoids. You will then be advised as to what type of procedure you need to go through. However, do not forget to ask information regarding the side effects of the procedure before making a final decision about it.
