As automobiles in real life began to advance, writers of the Batman comic constantly revamped the Batmobile to stay several steps ahead of automobiles on the commercial market. Some gadgets that were utilized by the US military were also added to the car in many of the story lines.
Replicas that adhered to the plot line were developed for each of the live action films that were developed for the Batman franchise, each complete with their own style, gadgetry, and specialized armor. One of the original prototypes was fitted with an afterburner, spherical bombs, and a highly advances global positioning system long before the GPS was available on the commercial market. As a result, Batman's wheels have become a central accessory in the development of the hero and his persona.
In a 2005 film adaption, Bruce Wayne modifies the ride to mimic military-styled automobiles, adding machine guns, specialized armor, and advanced weaponry to the car. The latest Batomobile that appeared in The Dark Knight looked like a mini Armored Personnel Carrier that is utilized by infantry armies the world over. Fitted with two large Fat Boy wheels in the front, the latest Batmobile did not have a front axle that was influenced by the style and technology found in Bladerunner. Production designers later stated that they wanted the latest Batmobile to look like a cross between a Lamborghini and a military tank. Clearly, the result was achieved.
Combined with the American love for cars and the central role to the character development, fans should expect even more changes and upgrades to the Batmobile in both movies and comics a like. As the Batman film franchise continues to evolve, so shall the hero's automobile, sure to be fitted with more nifty gadgets and gizmos that rival previous models.
