Common OTC supplements

Over the counter diet pills are those that one can purchase on the local pharmacy, online or supermarket. These are probably the most popular types of supplements due to their being greatly accessible to anyone. However, most, if not all, of these pills are not approved by the FDA. This only means that the use of each is completely within your discretion.

One popular OTC diet pill is the hoodia gordonii. This natural diet supplement is known to have the impressive ability to suppress hunger. A native of South Africa, the hoodia plant has been used by local tribesmen to stave off hunger during long periods outside hunting in the wild. The plant is believed to work by sending signals to the brain to trick it in believing that the stomach is full, even if it isnt. As for the side-effects, hoodias being relatively new is testament to the insufficient data regarding its effects to the body. So far, though, the supplement has not been known to provide any adverse effects to the body.

5-Hydroxytryptophan or simply 5-htp is another common OTC diet drug. This is actually an amino acid that has the ability to transform into serotonin. Supplements that contain 5-htp are known to suppress hunger like the hoodia gordonii pills. It is, however, important to remember to use this supplement moderately. 50 mg of 5-htp, three times each day can help reduce nausea.

Common prescription supplements

Adipex is one of the most popular prescription supplements. This drug works as a sympathomimetic appetite suppressant and used as a short-term cure for obesity. This is helpful for those who are finding it hard to adjust to a new eating habit. Since the effects of the drug is known to decrease after a few weeks, it is recommended to be used only during the initial weeks of the weight loss program.

Another prescription diet pill is phentermine. Like most of the supplements mentioned here, phentermine is effective in decreasing the appetite. The drug also typically comes in capsule or table form and taken three times per day, 30 minutes before each meal.
