Learn Some Auto Body Repair Basics

Although it might seem an intimidating task at first, some basics about auto body repair can be easily learnt. Knowing the basics will not only help you save expenses on minor problems such as scratches but will also save your time and energy that would have otherwise been spent on going to an auto body repair shop.

Minor damages on the auto body can be easily repaired using conventional tools such as an electric drill and sander. All you need to do is read out the instructions on the repair kit before using the tools and simply follow them. Here are a few techniques to fix minor damages to the auto body in a few simple steps. However, before you start the repairing process, make sure that you clean the automobile using cleaning products. The cleaner the auto body will be, the easier it will be for you to detect problems.

Scratches:

To fix scratches, you will require sandpaper and a water soaked sponge. Start by feathering the edges of the scratch towards the bare metal. Repeat this step several times until you can run a finger smoothly over the damaged area without feeling the edges of the scratch. However, if the scratch is deep, you will need to fill it with putty or filling. Again, an easy way to find out if the scratch is deep or not is to run your finger over it. To blend the putty or filling with the edges, use wet sand. Moreover, make sure that you blend the surrounding area with the repaired area well. Usually a primer and a wet sponge work well to give a fine finishing. You will easily find touch-up kits from an auto body supply shop to match the repaired region with the original color. Apply the final color and after it has dried, apply wet sand on it. A rubbing compound can be used to bring shine to the repaired region.

Rust:

Rust is another common problem that can be eradicated in a few simple steps. For this purpose you will require a circular sander but if you do not have one, you can simply use your hands. Start by grinding the rust till you reach the bare metal. An important point to remember is to remove the rust completely. Even if you leave out a tiny spot of rust, it will appear again after a few months. Now using an electric drill, drill holes beyond the area where the rust spot existed. Now place an adhesive backed repair screen, which you will easily find in an auto body supply shop. Then, use a putty to even out and shape the entire region. Just ensure that the transition from the repaired area to the original paint is smooth.

Using these few simple techniques, you can easily repair simple problems such as scratches and rust. Just ensure to read out the instructions before you begin.
