subject: Buying A Used Mercedes: Rules You Should Remember [print this page]

Buying a pre-owned Mercedes can be a wonderful way to get a classy vehicle for a fraction of the price you would pay straight off the manufacturing line. A car with a few thousand miles on it, traded in when the new models came out, is essentially new in all but name. But it will certainly not be new according to the price tag. Anyone who wants to save a bundle should look into this method of buying a good new car. Of course, there are risks when you buy used, even when it comes to a precision automobile with a powerful brand behind it. Here are some rules you should remember when you go shopping.

Don't Trust the Seller

Unless you have reason to believe this particular seller is somehow above telling lies, you should go into your buying excursion with an attitude of distrust. This may not be a great way to live your life, but it is an excellent way to buy any car, even a Mercedes. It doesn't matter if you're buying from a dealership or some guy off of an internet listing; assume everything they are saying is "unverified" at best. Do your own research when it comes to any claims they make. You may get lucky and find a salesman who is up front and honest about everything. If so, treasure that relationship, because it is a rare gem.

Get an Inspection

There are more than a few sellers who will simply turn you away if you demand an inspection of the vehicle they want you to buy. That's fine. Go elsewhere. There is no shortage of used Mercedes on the market, after all. Nothing says you have to buy from this guy or this dealership. If they don't want you to inspect their vehicle, what does that say? It seems to say they have something to hide. Wouldn't you rather know this now than in a few months when this supposedly "mint condition" car breaks down on you? Find a good mechanic and have them at the ready. Before you pull the trigger on the purchase, have them give it the old once-over. You'll be glad you did.

Do Your Research

Before you even get to the point where you are distrusting salesmen and inspecting cars, of course, you should do your own research at home. Know a bit about what you're looking for before you head out shopping. The world is filled with too many cars to simply browse until you find something you like. Spend a few weeks learning everything you can about used Mercedes so that you know what you're talking about when you get in front of a seller. You'll save time, money, and hassle by doing so.
