subject: How Long Do Motorcycle Tires Last? [print this page]

Dont you wish you could have a tire that lasts so long that you even forget the market price of tires? Well, guess what? There is no definite lifespan. How long it serves you largely depends on two things: its make and you!

While you cannot change the make of the tire, you can optimize the tires functionality by bearing the following in mind: inflation/air pressure, wheel balancing and alignment, load capabilities and lastly how well you take care of it. Other factors to consider are your driving style, the surface on which you ride and observing the recommended speed ratings.

Make of the tire

Tire manufacturers use different technologies to achieve different effects. One manufacturer may look at the mileage while another will look at cost production. It is therefore important to always check the qualities of a tire. Compare amongst all the available options in the market before you settle for a certain brand and model. Read product reviews from trusted sites and from fellow users too. A recent review of Michelin Anakee2 by Motorcyclenews.com shows that the tire has an average mileage of 5821 miles which is 29% better tread life than its nearest competitor, with no compromise in wet weather grip.

The age: when was the tire manufactured?

The law states clearly that tires that are six years old and above are not roadworthy, whether in use or not. In addition, tires that have been idle for long are equally dangerous. Check the manufacturing date of the tire, including the spare one, before you buy it.

Maintenance: How well do you take care of your tire?

Maintenance is the biggest determinant of the lifespan of your tire. Do not expose them to direct sunlight for long durations especially while in storage as they deteriorate faster. It is advisable to always keep them clean but avoid using chemicals to clean, plus do not leave oil and gasoline on your tires because they will wear the rubber compound. Go for regular checkups to ensure your tires are in top shape all the time.

Air pressure: Do you have the right air pressure?

Check that your tires have the right inflation. Over/underinflated tires are very dangerous and can easily cause accidents. Underinflating results in uneven tread wear while overinflated tires will increase tread wear at the center of the contact patch, and can be easily punctured by sudden impact.

Wheel Balance & Alignment

If your wheels are not aligned and well balanced, they are likely to wear quickly. Unbalanced tire vibrate at certain speeds, greatly accelerating tire wear. If you take off your rear wheel or adjust the chain or belt, have your tire balanced. Each revolution of an incorrectly aligned wheel can scuff off tread rubber, reduce tire mileage, and impair steering and cornering.

Load-Carrying Capabilities

Tires have a load index which indicates its optimal load capacity, which is the weight of the bike, its passenger and any other load on it. Overloading increases wear. Using underinflated tires will also lead to increased tire wear.

Enjoy longer service of your tires by taking good care of them. Do not expose them to direct sunlight, chemical, oil and gasoline, observe the recommended load and speed ratings and lastly use the right size and type for the right motorcycle.
