Pondicherry came under French rule 1673. It remained under the French for about 300 years before it attained independence in 1954. In 2006, name Pondicherry was changed to Puducherry which, in Tamil language, meant New Village.

This coastal city of Pondicherry, also called Pondy, is famous for its serene beaches. Hotel de Vile, French War Memorial, Puducherry Museum, Aayi Mandapam, Auroville Ashram, Shri Aurobindo Ashram, Promenade, Chunnambar Resort, Old Light house and Romaine Rolland Library are among the major tourist attractions in Pondicherry.

Pondicherry is situated near to the temple towns of Kanchipuram, Tiruvannamalai and Chidambaram, the heritage town of Mamallapuram and the hill stations of Yercaud and Kodaikanal. This made the place popular among travellers.

Pondicherry is connected with Bangalore by rail and road. Pondicherry does not have an airport. It has a railhead. There is only one direct train from Bangalore to Pondicherry. Yesvantpur-Pondicherry Garib Rath Express (No. 12255) departs Yesvantpur at 11.15 in the night and reaches Pondicherry at 8.50 in the morning. The train runs three days in a week on Mondays, Wednesdays and Sundays.

The most convenient way to travel from Bangalore to Pondicherry is by road. The travel by bus takes a little more than seven hours. There is no shortage of bus service between Bangalore and Pondicherry. Alternately, the travellers can first catch a bus from Bangalore to Salem and then again a bus from Salem to Pondicherry. Taxi cab takes less than seven hours to cover the distance but it costs anything between Rs. 9 to Rs.24 per kilometre.
