subject: 5 Must-know Tips For Buying A Used Caravan [print this page]

If you are in the middle of your first used caravan buying experience, its likely that you are encountering feelings similar to those experienced when buying your first car or your first home excitement and apprehension. To ensure that your buying experience goes as smoothly as possible, we have compiled a list of five must-know tips that are designed to prevent you making some of the most common mistakes associated with a caravan purchase.

Make a list of what you want and a list of what you need

Wants and needs are very different entities when it comes to used caravans, so it helps to make a list of features that fit into both these categories. Do you want a private bedroom but need bunk beds to accommodate the kids? When you go to look at vans, these lists will help you to stay focused on the needs; the wants are just a bonus.

Take a look at the caravans history

Most owners will keep track of all their caravans paperwork, but if the van has been resold a number of times its not uncommon for bits and pieces of this documentation to go missing. Checking out the paperwork will allow you to see the repair and accident history of the van, not to mention any other relevant information.

Inspect the mechanical components

If you can, bring along someone who has experience with used caravans (such as a qualified mechanic or a friend who has used one all their life) when you go to an inspection. They can help you to look over all the mechanical workings of the van, ensuring that the hitch, axle and wheels are in good condition.

Inspect the bodywork components

Whilst youre at it, you need to thoroughly inspect the bodywork of the caravan. The outside panels may have been subjected to corrosion and bulging, which can lead to even more problems down the track. You should also thoroughly inspect the inside for signs of damp, as this is a hugely expensive problem to rectify.

Inspect fixtures and fittings

Before purchasing a used caravan or making any sort of offer, you need to check that all fixtures and fittings are working properly. Can you see the television properly in the living area? Does everyone fit around the dining table? Do cupboard handles turn properly? Do the appliances work? Do all of the taps work?

The important thing to understand about all of these tips is that they are designed to help you make the best decision for your needs. If everything about the used caravan is fantastic except for the fact that a few of the appliances arent working, you dont necessarily have to let this put you off making an offer. You could actually use the fact that the refrigerator and television need to be replaced as a bargaining chip to get an even better price!
