Employment Agency Insurance Provides Coverage For Temp Workers

Employment agencies provide temporary workers to businesses of all types. For the benefit of both safety and employee moral, temporary staff members should be held to the same standards as permanent staff, and treated with the same degree of respect and consideration. There are some specific risk management issues to address when using temporary staff, which in turn can help with the insurance program put in place and stemming possible losses.

Taking an initial assessment of temps

It is always a good idea to test and document basic competency before allowing temporary staff members to take on a new job responsibility at any facility. An owner or manager should go over the specific duties needed to be performed and ensure the staffer understands all that is required.

If a previously hired temporary worker returns to a similar position at the facility, explain any changes in policy and procedure that have occurred in the interim. In addition, verify that he or she has retained the necessary knowledge and skills to perform delegated tasks.

Provide a proper orientation

Dont just throw them into the mix. The orientation program should effectively communicate the organizations expectations of temporary employees, answer any questions, provide introductions to colleagues and facilitate a smooth transition. During orientation, temporary staff members should also be required to review the facilitys policies and procedures and also sign a form indicating that they will comply with regulations. This form, and other personnel documents, should be maintained on file with the staffing agency.

Training and supervision will better prepare a temp

A thorough and well-documented training program, in addition to orientation, should precede every new work assignment, skilled or unskilled. Appoint a seasoned supervisor as a resource to assist newly hired temporary staff with the transition and to provide initial monitoring. Until staff members have demonstrated full proficiency close supervision should continue to be provided.

Training generally occurs as part of the orientation process, and responsibility for temporary staff knowledge and acceptance of privacy regulations should reside with the staffing agency.

Acknowledgement of company confidentiality

As with full-time employees, temporary personnel must understand company confidentiality statutes, laws governing privacy requirements and relevant company practices. Most businesses generally require that the staffing agency have temporary personnel sign binding confidentiality statements, and then place these executed documents in their personnel files. Any employee violating these statutes may be subject to disciplinary actions or termination.
