Pune, situated in Deccan Plateau near western coast was earlier known as Punya-Nagiri or Queen of Deccan. The distance from Pune to Nagpur is about 735 km. Located in Deccan Plateau, Nagpur is known as the orange capital of India because it is a major cultivator and trade centre in oranges. Nagpur is located at the centre of the country. For this reason, Nagpur has the Zero Mile Marker, which indicates the geographical centre of India.

The foundation of the city was laid by Bakht Buland Shah, who was the Gond King of Deogad in 1703. It was named Nagpur since Nag River flows through the city. Among the major tourist attractions in and around the city include Gavilgad Fort, Dragon Palace Temple, Forts of Balapur, Adasa, Maharaj Baug and Zoo.

Nagpur is well connected with Pune by air, rail and road. Among the airlines, spiceJet has flights from Pune to Nagpur. The distance by air from Pune to Nagpur is 661 km and the flight time is around one hour.

There are two daily direct trains from Pune to Nagpur. They are Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus-Gondia Maharashtra Express (No.11039) and Pune-Howrah Azad Hind Express (No.12129). Some trains run only on certain days of the week. They include (with the operative days in brackets) Pune-Nagpur Express No.12135 (Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays), Pune-Bilaspur Express No.12850 (Fridays), Pune-Nagpur Garib Rath Express No.12113 (Mondays, Wednesdays and Sundays), Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus-Dhanbad Dakshina Bhoomi Express (Thursdays) and Pune-Hatia Express (Wednesdays and Sundays). The distance from Pune to Nagpur by rail is 1002 km. The trains cover this distance in about 18 hours.

Travel by road is popular in this route. There are regular bus services by Maharashtra State Transport Corporation (MSRTC) and private bus operators. Recently MSRTC had launched a Volvo A/c bus service from Pune to Nagpur (and back). The fare for this trip is Rs.1210. The private bus operators charge a fare of Rs.2 to Rs.3 per kilometre for the trip. Travel time for the journey is about 13 hours.

Taxi cabs are also available in this route. While the fare for the four-seater Tata Indica is Rs.14000, seven-seater Tavera charges a fare of Rs.18000. The road route from Pune to Nagpur passes through Ahmedabad, Aurangabad, Jalna, Akola and Amravati.
