subject: Considering The Role Of Bottle Feeding Vis A Vis Breastfeeding [print this page] The choice between bottle feeding and breastfeeding a baby is often difficult for many mothers. Bottle feeding is anathema for some women because they consider it a dereliction of their motherly role. For other women, breastfeeding is what they shy away from because of the various misconceptions that they have about the same.
Pediatricians are however clear that breast milk is all that a baby needs for food in its first few months, before it is gradually introduced to solid food. Bottle feeding and breastfeeding are not mutually exclusive as some mothers have come to believe; the two can actually complement one another very well. Some mothers fear that bottle feeding a baby can cause issues like stomach upsets but research has shown that using wrong bottles and handling them poorly are the culprits but not bottle feeding in itself. With a good quality Avent bottle, mothers shouldn't have any problems with bottle feeding.
Bottle feeding is a good way for busy mums to ensure that their babies are receiving breast milk even in their absence. A mother just has to express some breast milk beforehand and then safely store it in a clean Avent bottle. A nanny, a sibling, or even the father will then give the Avent bottle to the baby when it is hungry. Such a baby will therefore still get enough supply of its mother's milk even when she is not at home. Upon her return the baby can suckle in the usual way. Used in this way, Avent bottles do not usurp the mother's breastfeeding but rather complement it.
Avent bottles are also useful if the mother's breast milk is no longer sufficient for the baby and she thus has to supplement it with cow's milk or infant formula. Inasmuch as infants can do with breast milk exclusively for their first six months or so, the mother's milk will eventually have to be supplemented. Avent bottles are really convenient for giving a baby liquid food even as he/she continues to breastfeed. Sometimes, for reasons a mother cannot avoid, she can find herself separated from her baby. In such times of separation the baby still needs to be fed and so the caregiver can without hesitation use the Avent bottle to do so.
Mothers who intend to bottle feed their babies need to make their choice of feeding bottle very carefully. They need bottles that are easy to use. More importantly, bottles should be easy to clean because babies' tummies are very sensitive. Avent bottles meets all the standards required for feeding bottles and therefore mothers can use them will full confidence.
